The Backyard Chicken Coop Starter Guide for Spring

1. Selecting the Right Location

Your coop needs to be on a flat, well-draining area of your yard. Ideally, place it in a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade to keep your chickens comfortable in hot weather.

2. Space and Safety Requirements

Plan for at least 3 to 4 square feet of indoor coop space per chicken, and 8 to 10 square feet of outdoor run space. A secure latch is critical to protect your flock from backyard predators like raccoons and stray cats.

3. Ventilation and Nesting Boxes

Proper ventilation is key to keeping the coop fresh and dry. Make sure your coop has vents near the roof line that allow fresh air to circulate without creating drafts on the chickens. Provide one nesting box for every 3 to 4 hens.

4. Preparing for Your Chicks

Before your chicks arrive, set up a warm brooder with fresh pine shavings, a heat lamp, chick starter feed, and a clean waterer. Move them to the outdoor coop once they are fully feathered (typically around 6 weeks of age).
